DESCRIPTION :

An oily liquid ranging from light gray to light yellow color with a distinct odor.

COMPOSITION:

Each 1 ml of the drug contains:

  • Megestrol acetate: 5 mg
  • Additional ingredients: Polyethylene glycol-400 up to 1 ml

CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY

Megestrol acetate, a synthetic progestogen, affects the hypothalamic-pituitary system, blocking the release of gonadotrophins (follicle-stimulating and luteinizing hormones). This leads to delayed follicle maturation in the ovaries and inhibits testosterone synthesis in males, resulting in suppressed estrus and sexual attraction.

In dogs and cats, the drug reduces sexual activity and associated behaviors.

Its mechanism of action includes:

  • Antigonadotropic activity: inhibiting gonadotropin hormone secretion and delaying ovulation, thus suppressing estrus.
  • Progestogenic action: directly affecting the uterine endometrium, activating the secretory phase, delaying embryo implantation, and enhancing contraceptive properties.

APPLICATION :

Orally administered to dogs for:

  • Preventing or terminating estrus in female dogs
  • Preventing unwanted pregnancy in female dogs
  • Suppressing libido in male dogs

DOSAGE :

Administer orally with food or directly to the root of the tongue.

Female Dogs:

  • To prevent estrus: 1 ml of the preparation per 10 kg of body weight every 14 days. Estrus typically resumes within 21 days after discontinuation.
  • To stop estrus: 1 ml of the preparation per 10 kg of body weight for 7 days (upon the onset of signs of sexual arousal).
  • As a contraceptive: 2 ml of the preparation per 5 kg of body weight daily for 2 days after mating.

Male Dogs:

  • For sedation during sexual arousal: 1 ml of preparation per 10 kg of body weight daily for 5 days.

CONTRAINDICATION :

Avoid use in animals with genitourinary system diseases, tumors, immature, pregnant, or lactating animals. Also, avoid use after estrus onset for more than 3 days and in young animals during their first estrus due to cycle timing difficulties.

PRECAUTION:

Prolonged use may alter breast development, increase appetite, and lead to weight gain.

PACKAGING:

Available in plastic vials and/or bottles (glass or plastic with a drip-stopper) of 1 ml, 2 ml, or 4 ml sizes, packaged in cartons.

STORAGE:

Store in a dark, inaccessible place at temperatures ranging from 5°C to 25°C. Avoid storage with food or drinks.
